Kamigumi to enter grid-scale battery business
Kamigumi Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Kobe; President & Representative Director: Yoshihiro Fukai; "Kamigumi" hereinafter) has made a decision to enter the grid-scale battery business ("Business" hereinafter), and intends to construct a grid-scale battery system in Kasai City, Hyogo.
The Japanese government is promoting the adoption of solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to strengthen the nation's energy self-sufficiency. However, progress in its adoption involves issues such as instability in the electric power grid due to excess power generation, since renewable power generation varies with the weather and other factors. Therefore, keeping supply and demand in balance will prove essential to solving these issues.
Grid-scale batteries differ from standard storage batteries used to store power generated by individual companies in that they are connected directly to the power grid, making it possible to adjust the supply-demand balance by charging and discharging electricity in response to supply and demand conditions and stabilize the grid. These batteries are expected to play a key role in furthering the adoption of renewable energy.
Through this business, Kamigumi will help stabilize grid supply and demand and, by extension, help promote the adoption of renewable energy and move Japan closer to carbon neutrality.
【Overview of the grid-scale battery business】
Description: This business involves using grid-scale battery systems for storage (purchase) of power
during excess generation and release (sale) of power when generation is lower than
demand, as well as trading on various electricity markets, contributing to both
Kamigumi's profitability and stability of power supply and demand.
Name: Kasai Megapower Storage Plant (tentative name)
Location: Sakae-cho, Kasai City, Hyogo
Capacity: 13 MW output, 54.84 MWh storage
Commencement of construction: January 2025 (planned)
Completion of construction: February 2026 (planned)
